TALKIE ATTRACTIONS

OPERA HOUSE-. “THE- WHITE SISTER,” A new contribution to the list of imposing screen achievements came t.o the Hawera Opera House last night m the presentation of Metro-Gold wynMaydr’s talking picture version of ‘ J he White Sister,” with Helen Hayes and Clark Gable in the- principal roles It will screen to-night and on Monday. In its poignant, touching narrative, its beautiful direction, its effective camera work, and in the brilliant performances' of its two well-known stars this picture stands out forcibly as an example of the best in cinema art. Ihe talkie version of F l . Marion Crawfords story of the girl who enters a convent I when she believes her lover to be- dead l only to meet him again after she has taken her holy v-o-ws, brings out its most forceful moments. Obviously it is the work of Miss Hayes, Gable, and an unusually competent supporting cast which has much to clo with maklna- the talking-picture version of I In, White Sister” the stirring, effective, romantic drama that it is. Miss Hayes, whose work in “The bm of Madelon Claudet” has proved beyond doubt that she is a striking emotional actress, again brings all her skill to the role of Angelina, heroine of the present vehicle. Gable likewise proves himself an admirable choice for the role of the soldier who finds religious vows an impregnable bar to his happiness. The love- scenes between the two- are beautifully handled. The always dependable Lewis Stone adds another fine portrayal to a long list of character roles as the aristocratic father who forbids liis daughter’s love; the picture is given humorous touches in the dry wit of the inimitable Louise Clossei Hale, who- plays the family servant; and the cast if well rounded out by May Robson, Edward Arnold and Alan Edwards. The booking is heavy. Seats may be reserved at Miss Blake s.

GRAND THEATRE

SOUTH OF THE RIO GRANDE’ AND “GOLD DUST GERTIE.”

The Buck Jones vehicle that opened at the Opera House- to-day and screens at the Grand Theatre to-niglit and Monday, presents the daredevil player in a colourful, fast-moving drama of Old Alexico. “South of the Rio Grande,” his new Columbia picture, provides an hour of thrills that is the last word in whirlwind adventure. Romance-packed, swiftly-exciting and dramatic, it is easily a top-notcher, and a treat for those that like their eliteltain me lit fast, furious and exciting. A perfect picture for the hard-riding, fa-st-sliooting, romantic hero, Buck, who has been surrounded with a splendid cast, Mona Maris, Doris Hill and George Lewis. The second attraction to be presented this evening will be “Gold Dust Gertie,” starring Winnie Lightner, who made such a great -success of “Golddiggers on Broadway,” “Hold Everything,” and “Life of the Party. Olsen and Johnson, the noted stage comedians, support Aliss Lightner in her latest - production. In addition, episode 11 of “Jungle Afystery” will be shown.

“Peradventure,” remarked the man with the flowing locks to the cliap smoking his pipe aboard a Wellington train, “Peradventure, friend, you fail to realise that in smoking that evilsmelling tobacco you are offending those who don’t smoke?” “Peradventure governor,” rejoined the smoker, “you forget this is a blooming smokecar, and if you object to smoking why travel in it? As for ‘ evil-smelling tobacco’ mine is toasted New Zealand and the smoke cannot annoy even a crank. Take my advice, boss, buy a pipe, learn to -smoke, and make your miserable life happy.” The long-hair-ed one smiled sadly and shook his head. Perhaps he has tried to smoke a pipe? Anyhow, “toasted Now Zealand” is not only delightfully fragrant, but thanks to being toasted is quite harmless. All four brands (Riverhead Gold, Navy -Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead) are the same—the sweetest,, coolest, purest, most- delicious and least harmful of any tobacco manufactured. Of course it is being imitated. Every good thing is imitated—so be careful what j'ou buy!—Advt.
