The Mayor oi I\ew York city, Mr. John P. O'Brien, has ior the moment made himself highly unpopular with many of the city’s residents and others living outside the city radius. The board of aldermen has approved of a new tax on motor-cars to equal that already paid to the state, while owners of out-of-town cars must’ pay Is each time they enter the city by one of its great bridges across the Hudson and Bast Rivers. It is further suggested I that a tax of shall be paid on each taxi-cab fare. An automatic three-speed gear box has been produced in America, the gears changing from first to second at speeds above five miles an hour when the throttle is released, and from second to top anywhere above 10 miles an hour, the gear changing down automatically when the. speed of the car falls to these figures unless the driver presses a small pedal to effect an earlier change down.
