DEPARTURE OF CRUISERS

CONCLUDING EXERCISES COOK STR AIT~MANOEUYRES (By Telegraph- -Press Association.l WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. Fine conditions prevailed to-day for the departure of the Australian cruisers Canberra and Australia. The Diomede, which in company with the Dunedin will carry out combined exercises with the Canberra and Australia in Cook Strait, left Wellington at 1.42 p.m. The Dunedin left Wellington on Saturday morning for Picton and- met the Diomede in Cook Strait. Practice firing was undertaken by the Australian cruisers at 5.50 p.m. They will engage with the Dunedin and Diomede in strategical exercises. The exercises will probably conclude at mid-day tomorrow, and the Australian ships will then leave on the return trip to Australia.

New Plymouth will play a part in the exercises by reason of the port being used as the base for the reconnoitring seaplane which is participating.
