TEMPERANCE UNION

H AWEP, A BR ANC I I M EETING. FRANCHISE DAY CELEBRATED. The monthly meeting of the Hawera branch of tlio Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Bible Class room on Tuesday afternoon. Franchise Day was celebrated by an excellent attendance of members * and friends. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Miss Hill and Mrs. Irvine, who are indisposed. The president, Mrs. Rxley, mentioned that the women of New Zealand secured the franchise- 40 years ago, and now Mi’s. McCombs, ol I.yttelton a W.C.T.U. member, bail been elected to Parliament. Miss D. Corrigan then gave an interesting talk on the “League of Nations’’ and was accorded a vote, of thanks. Items were: Songs, Mrs. Allwnght; elocution, Mrs. Strange; songs, Mrs. Gannaway. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. L. A. Taylor. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Sharps and helpers, Mrs. Evans acting as hostess.
