The King has approved Hie conferment of a baronetcy upon Sir Percy Greenaway on his retirement from the Lord Mayoralty of London, and knighthoods upon Alderman C. H. 'Collett and W. L. Threltord, retiring sheriffs, says a British Official Wireless message.

Mr and Mrs. H. R. Wake (Auckland), Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baxter (England), Mr. D. Ardell (Wellington). Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P. (Stratford). Mr. T. Kidd (Palmerston North), and Mr. and Mrs. L. AY. Anderson (New Plymouth) were guests at the White Hart Hotel, Hawera, last evening.

; -An old and highly-respected resident iof the district, Mrs. Marv Ann Grant. 1 widow of the late Mr. James Grant. Taiporohonui, died yesterday at Hajwera*after a long illness. Mrs. Grant j had, been failing for a long time and her death was not unexpected. Mr. Grant died ten years ago. Mrs. Grant, j who was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Hall, who were among the early settlers at Normanby, was born in Wellington in 1859. She was married at Wellington to the late Mr. J Copeland and at the age of 2f settled with him at Taiporohenui, 54 years ago, experiencing the trials and hardships of the pioneer days. The death of Mr' Copeland occurred within a few years of their arrival at Taiporohenui and some years later she was married to the late Mr. James Grant. Mrs. Grant is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E. Paterson, of Tainorohenui. and one son, Mr. N. Copeland, of Taiporohenui. One son, Mr. David Grant, died at Hawera following active service in the Great War, and two sons of the first marriage, Messrs Herbert and Allan Copeland, also predeceased Mrs. Grant. Mrs. Grant was one of the keenest lady supporters of the Egmont A. and P. Association and' over a long period of years she gav° active assistance which was much '-’lucd bv ‘ successive committees. Tliro'.igliO'ut her lifetime Mrs. Grant was actively connected with local affairs in the Tainorohenui district. The funeral will be held from Tainorohenui j vc 2 p.m. to-morrow (Friday). |
