PASSING OF PIONEER

MR. FRED. S. C. LIVINGSTON. EARLY DAY'S AT “WAIPAPA.” A pioneer settler of South Taranaki who was associated with the early days of settlement at “Waipapa,” Tokaora, and on the Waimate Plains, Mr Fred. S. C. Livingston, died yesterday at Hawera, after a long period of illness. His death removes one who, born at Tokaora, 62 years ago, had been actively associated with the progress of the district during his whole lifetime. He was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs James Livingston who took up their farm holding, “Waipapa, ” on the Main South Road, in the 'sixties and were among the very earliest of the settlers in the district. Mr Fred. Livingston w T as for many years an active member and always a strong supporter of the Hawera Rugby Football Club and he was a senior player and a representative of Taranaki for some years during the latter part of the last century. Mr Livingston was always a consistent and active supporter of the Egmont A. and P. Association and that institution owes much to his good work. He was president in 1906. He took an active part in the business of the Riverdale Dairy Company and was a director for some vears.

His father, the late Mr James Livingston, was one of the most noteworthy figures In the history of early Hawera and took a leading part in the operations against the Maoris and, after the war, was unanimously elected “President of- Hawera Republic” in 1879 when the appeal made for support against the Maoris "was unheeded by the 'Government. Mr James Livingston was also one of the heroes of the fight at Te Ngutu-o-te-manu. Mr F. -S. C. Livingston is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss Jessie, and two sons, Messrs. Guy and Jamqs, all of whom are resident at the farm on the Rainie Road. Mrs J. H. Baker, of the South Road, is a sister and Mr Guy Livingston, of Takapau (H. 8.), is his only living brother.

The funeral will leave his late rest donee, Rainie Road, at 2 p.m. on Wed nesday for the Hawera Cemetery.
