HAWERA BAND SUBSIDY

(To the Editor.) Sir, —What a wm-nderful time “Long Standing Sufferer” must have haul on •Sunday, sitting down to pen such mighty word's of wisdom as those appearing in your issue of yesterday. He .states that he is not antagonistic to the band and immediately sets to work to’ prov-e in writing to the contrary. He further -states that the band was ignaminiou-sly defeated by -the -Stratford -band', but there he is in ignorance of -certain alteration© on- the judge's a-wrard sheet. The fact -that the band did uoit compete this year was -not 0-ue to being beaten in 1932) but -due to other matters quite beyond- the comprehension of “L.S.S.” Whioi is this “expert” in Hawera who repairs musical instruments? Let me remind both of those gentlemen- that there is only one expert in New Zealand. Unfortunately for everyone -concerned “L.S.S.” has a grievance and is venting his spleen upon -the band, thinking that it reflects upon -the conductor. He -cannot enter into correspondence without veiled ininuen does about the conductor, and What he earnls. -Let mo remind him that he could mot do a very minute part of the work, -do'n.e by Mr Fox, amid as he is throwing out challenges, I challenge him to come into the band room, or fh-o Orchestral o-r Operatic -Societies’ -rooms and prove iit.. What Mr Fox earns is mo business of “L. 5.5.,” Haydn, o-r anyone -else, and they would be w r eil advised -to- mind their -own business. Anld mow “Haydn” gives forth a mighty screed. As for Wanganui being 'the worst B grade contest h-eld, I would advise Haydn that the winning band, Ashburton, -had previously won the A grade contest at Dunedin, beating the Riedffern Band from Australia. As far as this (Hawera) band competing A grade next year, nothing definite has been said by anyone in this connection, except by splenetic individuals like “Hadyin” and “L.S.-5.,” and if the band dobs play in -the A grade it is- mo business of ’ anyone's but the bandsmen. “Haydn’s” last .sentence is ridiculous, more so than- the rest of the letter,, and "is not worth answering. Now, Sir,.l have to thank you fo.r your courtesy in granting me space, and in doing so state that a® far ais I am oo.nicerned the ■matter is finished. Doubtless ‘ ‘ Haydn’ and “L.S.S.” will get together to-mor-row and think up mighty phrases with which .t-o annihilate -me, but- let them-. I’ll tell you what, Mr Editor; I’ll meet them 'both on the public platform and debate the matter in public, -the latter to. be the judge.—l am^ E e^ HOVEN .
