THE BACON TRADE
HIGHER LOCAL VALUES . INCREASE IN EXPORTS. Commenting on the observations of a. leading stock auctioneer at Pukekohe that the improved prices realised for baconers, was attributable to two factors, namely, the activities of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Limited, and to the anticipation of a big Christmas demand both here and in the Old Country for bacon and ham, Mr W. A. Phillips chairman of the Pig Marketing Association, said lie appreciated the reference to the association’s operations. He pointed out, however, that outers had as usual, accumulated large stocks of hams throughout the season in anticipation of the Christmas reouirements. It could not be said, therefore, that the increase in price was due to' the demand for Christmas hams.
The fact was that during last season the number of baconers exported had increased from 19.000 to 60,000 and in conseouence bvconers were m considerably shorter supply than they had been for & Tong time. This, in Mr Phillips’ opinion, .w,?a alone refcpon-
sible for the present activity on the market and the improvement in the prices.
The action of the British Government in restricting fore.gn imports had brought about a general rise in values, and this fact, coupled with the shortage in supplies on the local market, had greatly improved the prospects of the pig producer for the new season, ’file restriction on foreign imports into England and other measures had enabled the association, through Amalgamated Dairies, Lmited, its London agents, to establish a bacon curing factory at Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Mr Phillips mentioned that all indications pointed to another successful export season for the association, which had made provision to meet the expected substantial further increase in production and to take advantage of developments for the improved marketing of its products on its export markets.
