WANGANUI SPRING RACES
SPEEDMINT A WINNER. PLYING TO ROYAL HUNTING. WANGANUT, Sept. 22. After a day’s postponement the Wanganui. Jockey Club was favoured with fine bright weather for the opening day of its spring meeting. It was beautifully fine late in the afternoon, the sun shining from a cloudless sky. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen the track was in surprisingly good order, improving as the racing proceeded. The racing was of a high standard, some good performances being registeredl Speedmint won the Marangai Handicap, and the Plying Handicap fell to Royal Hunting. In the Seafield Handicap, the three-year-old Porotiti won brilliantly. Favourites fared fairly well during the day, and there were none of the surprises usually associated with spring racing.
The attendance was good, but the totalisator investments were £6253 10s, against £6816 10s on the first day last spring, a decrease of £593. Considering that only £96 was invested on .the opening event, this result must be view'cd as very satisfactory. JOCKEY SUSPENDED. After the race for the Putiki Hack Handicap, R. Mc'Tavish, rider of the favourite Cherry King, was called upon to explain his defeat. After hearing evidence the judicial committee examined the owner and trainer, but iMcTavish was suspended for three months for not riding the horse on its merits. McTavish has lodged an appeal against the sentence. In the last race Merry Way met severe interference, but this was found to be accidental. COMMENT ON THE RACING REVIEW BY “LIMITED” With the Hawera trainers attending the Wanganui meeting, training operations have not been of an interesting nature, only routine exercise work being performed. At Wanganui on Friday there was only a fail* attendance and despite good fields and quality horses the tota lisa tor was down considerably. The hurdle race resolved itself into a. match between Henry of Navarre and Knollmere, the latter crowding on the pace from the outset to win easily. For the two-year-old parade thirteen youngsters appeared and were despatched in two divisions. Pin Money, by Paper Money—Vicerinel, a full relative to Gold Tinge and Rerentu, began very fast, but was joined by Gay Blonde over the last part and the pair finished together. Gay Blonde is a- sister to Gay Shiela. a good performer last season. In the second division Scholar, by Diacouenod—Fillette, a. half brother to Headmistress, led all the way to finish in front of Inveresk with Superior close up. Sir Charles Clifford’s representative Copyist, by Winning Hit—Miss Mimic, scored decisively in the maiden. Tt was his second race and he ’ will bo an interesting runner in the Guineas to-day.
Pango -repeated, his, Marton performance bv getting up in time to again beat Ythan. Pango promises well and is a good advertisement for the sire. Nigger Minstrel. Headmistress was unlucky in the run having to cover much extra ground. Cherry King’s rider, McTavish, was suspended for three months as a result of an inquiry.
Speedmint won the distance handicap in easy fashion. Chopin, after being last for part of the journey, came with bis characteristic run to finish second. Little Doubt tried to win all the way. Gibraltar faded at the finish after going well for a mile. Brambletorn showed surprising form and will soon be at Iris best.
The Seafield .Handicap was something of a Guineas trial for the three-year-olds Porotiti, Midian and Spiral and they finished among the first four runners. Porotiti improved vastly on liis Marton running and led all the way and, although he had to be shaken up at the finish, he never looked like being beaten. Midian finished on welt after being well back. Spiral was disappointing as lie had every chance. Foreign Queen faded out badly after being well placed at half way.
In the Duirie Hack Passion Fruit was a, hot favourite and, leading from the barrier rise, had to be ridden out to score from King Thomond. Diagano and Bold Bid were well back throughout.
In the Flying Handicap Slippery and Royal Hunting began best from Impasto and The Tiger. Royal Hunting and Slippery led into the straight with Ried Manfred and Curie handy. In a slashing finish Royal Hunting hung on to win by a head from Red Manfred with Curie a head away third. Some lengths back View Halloo was just in front of Slippery and The Tiger.
