SUBSIDY ON SHIPPING
SOUTH AFRICAN PLAN. ■SURPRISE IN BRITAIN. (United Press Association—By mcctrlo Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, Sept. 10. The South African subsidy for Italian lines .has amazed British shipping circles. It is supposed that the service is associated with Africa’s increased exports of wool, sheepskins and hides to France and wool, hides, skins, meat and copper to Italy. The “Daily Herald” says that the real reason for South Africa’s subsidy for Italian shipping companies for five years commencing in March of £150,000 annually, is that the is over-run with scrub cattle, bringing only 20s to 30s a head. They are of too poor quality for the British market, but are suitable for the French and Italian armies, which cannot afford Argentine meat. South Africa will gladly reduce her scrubs in the interests of breeding good cattle.
