APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSES.
AUTHORITY SITS AT HAWERA
The transport licensing authority for the No. 5 district commenced a sitting of two days at Hawera to-day, when applications for goods service licenses were heard. The personnel of the authority is Mx\ P. Thomson (chairman) Mr. J. C. Rolleston and Major R.. A. Wilson. Automatic licenses for services between Alton and Hawera and Hurleyville and Patea, and also a general area license in the Otoia riding in the Patea County and the Mokoia Riding of the Hawera County, were granted to S. A. Couchman, Alton. The applicant, for whom Mr. J. Houston appeared, said he had conducted two services for nine years and employed two lorries. One route was from Alton to Hawera and from Hurleyville to Patea There was no passenger service over the first route, but he did not take passengers. The first service was mainly for the collection of cream and cartage of general merchandise, and the second largely for the cartage of cheese. There was, of course, back' loading for settlers in both cases. At times there was a good deal of general cartage in both the Patea and Hawera counties, mainly between Patea and Hawera. There was also the carriage of live stock between Alton and Kakaramea to. the railway for despatch to freezing works. H. Gierke, Mokoia (Mr P. J. M. Coleman), was granted a general license within the Mokoia Riding (Hawera County) and portion of the Otoia Riding (Patea County), also a license for the cartage of pigs and calves in those areas ; the cartage of lambs in the Hawera County, the eastern part of the Waimate West County, the south riding of the Eltham County and that portion of the Patea County to the north of Waverley. The applicant stated that he had been in business since September 1, 1931. He had contracts for the oollertion of pigs and bobby calves in the Mokoia, Whakamara, Meremere and Ohangai districts, but his operations took him as far north as Elt'ham and as far south as Waverley. He also- had a wood contract with the Manutahi Dairy Company and was building up a carrying business which was not in competition with the railway. Replying to Mr Couch (Ra ilway Department) he said he had had his lamb carrying contract for only one year. The reason for not trucking lambs wa® to save time and to avoid bruising. Only a seasonal license was wanted for Jambs as far as the district to Elltham wa.s concerned, hut in respect of other live stock a full license was required. W. Hamilton, Ohangai (Mr R, J. O’Dea) was granted a license for general carrying, including live stock over the Hawera County east of the Waingongoro River, and that part of the Patea County lving to the east of the Ball Road. ' , , . The applicant stated that he had. conducted the service for the past nine years. He had a cream collection contract from Whakamara to Hawera, and a contract for the cartage of produce from the Meremere factory to the railway at Mokoia. There was also a similar contract with the Mel Is Company. Requisites were also carried from the station to the factories. Calves and pigs were also carried under contract from Manutahi, Whakamara, Mokoia, Meremere, Ohangai, Ararata, Fraser Rload and Whareroa to the nearest railway for consignment to Waitara. In addition wool was carted to the rail and there was general carrying.
