LOCAL AND GENERAL

—. Relief work for this week was allocated .to 132 Hawera registered unemployed—.nine A class men, 85 B and 38 C class men—'compared' with 146 men last week amd 154 men the previous •week. Mid-September is early for open sea bathing. Tempted by the bright sunshine and the genial warmth it engendered, quite a number of girl and women bathers disported tjheinfcelves in the Harbour at Oriental Bay, Wellington. on Saturday afternoon, while the beach was lined with children waders, who seemed to find the temperature of the water at least endurable (states the “Dominion”). There is at present a heavy glut of cauliflowers on the Auckland market. Cauliflowers are usually plentiful at this time of the year, but- the recentmild weather has developed large quantities quickly, and as they cannot be held back for more than a few days, growers, have been foitied to send them to market in spite of the low prices ruling. Sacks were selling last week at from ninepence to two shillings.' A farmer in the Auroa district who suffered severe rheumatic pains in an arm has twice been afforded complete relief following stings by bees, reports the “Hawera Star” correspondent. On the first occasion the cure by stinging happened by accident. It proved so successful that when the farmer experienced a second attack of the rheumatic pains he caught two bees in a saucer of honey and placed them on the affected arm. Since then he has been free of the rheumatic trouble.
