A slight earth tremor was. felt by Hawera residents about 10.30 o’clock yesterday morning.
Relief work for this week was allocated to lot Hawera registered unemployed—nine A class men, 101 B and 44 G class men. The death of Sir Nicholas Lockyer, the first Commissioner of Taxation in i>ew South Wales, is announced in a cable from Melbourne. He was 78 years of age.
As the result of inquiries made in Hawera this morning it was ascertained that tlia No. 10 building scheme lias definitely improved the unemployment situation in the town so far as it affects skilled and unskilled labour in the building trade. Messrs Dali ill and Gibson, architects, reported that they had in hand at the present time three reconstruction jobs giving employment to 30 skilled and unskilled workmen. Included in these jobs were the reconstruction by Messrs Boon Bros, of premises in Regent Street occupied by George and Doughty Ltd., and the remodelling by Mr. E. A. Baccy of premises in Union Street to be occupied by the Para Rubber Company. The third job was that of. the remodelling of the Hawera Technical High School hostel by day labour under the direct supervision of the architects. It was mentioned by Messrs Duff ill and Gibson that two other large building schemes involving work of a similar nature to that in, hand were contemplated and that applica tioiis already had been made for the Unemployment Board’s subsidy. V hen necessary arrangements had been finalised and contracts let it was anticipat ed that work would bo available for an additional 30 men.
