Annoyed 'because Surrey, with five wickets down for 524 runs, did not declare at the luncheon adjournment, Yorkshire burlesqued a game at the Oval. Verity, when bowling, placed every fieldsman, including the wicketkeeper, on the leg side of the wicket and sent down a. number of overarm balls that were almost wides on the onside. Then in the middle of the over lie [bowled underarm balls, being almost grubbers, but bad the laugh turned against him when the umpire no-balled the latter under the rule requiring a bowler to indicate a change of deliveries. Verity completed the' over with overarms, after which Surrey declared with a record total against j Yorkshire.
There was an unusual incident at the opening of Yorkshire’® innings. Sand'liam caught Holmes at mid-on off a no-ball. Sutcliffe, backing up too far, was run out. Surrev, in the first innings, scored 560 runs for 6 wickets and declared (Sq/uires 178, SandJjam 96, Barling 112. Winlaw not out 75). Yorkshire, in the first innings, made 233, Levi and (77) and followed on to score 2i9 for 5 wickets (Leyand not out, 74). Surrev won on the first innings.
