LADIES’ HOCKEY TOURNEY
FOUR TEAMS STILL UNBEATEN TARANAKI LOSES AGAIN. DEFEAT BY MANAiWATU. (By Telegraph —Preps Association.) DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 25. There, were surprises in the New Zealand ladies’ championship hockey tournament to-day. The weather was unusually warm and the grounds were in capital condition, having dried overnight. As a result of to-day’s series teams still unbeaten are Canterbury, Southland, Otago and Bush. Taranaki was again, defeated. The surprise of the day was the -Eastern v. Marlborough match, which resulted in a draw. Eastern was expected to win, as Marlborough had lost to Busli on the opening day 3—o and just beat Wairarapa A 2—l on Thursday. The meeting of Eastern and Bush to-morrow afternoon will have an important bearing on the championship. Another surprise was the defeat of Wellington by Ruahine, which scored an easy victory over the hitherto undefeated southern team. The home side was always on top. Results are: Section A. Akitio 9 v. Ruahine B 0. Southland 2 v. Wairarapa B 1. Canterbury 5 v. Auckland 1. Section B. Feilding 2 v. Ashburton 1. Ruahine A 4 v. Wellington 1. Otago 7 v. Wanganui 0. Section C. Bush 3 v. Wairarapa A 2. Marlborough 1 v. Eastern 1. Manawatu 2 v. Taranaki 1. The draw for to-morrow is : Section A —Wairarapa B v. Auckland, Akitio v. Southland, Canterbury v. Ruahine B. Section B —Wellington v. Ashburton, Otago v. Ruahine A, Feilding v. Wanganui. Section C —Eastern v. Bush, Wairarapa A v. Manawatu, Taranaki v. Marlborough. Akitio had the most pronounced victory of the day, defeating Ruahine B nine to nil. Goals were scored by Misses O. Yeoman (4), I. Berry (4) and A. Weeds.
Canterbury had an easy victory over Auckland, Canterbury played hardhitting hockey. The lialf-tme score was 2 —l. The Auckland full-backs were slow in clearing. The very fast Canterbury inner forwards were responsible for the side’s success. The Auckland wingers, Mrs Caraac and Miss E. Simons, battled hard throughout, but the Canterbury backs were sure. Goals for Canterbury were scored by Misses M. McKenzie (21, V. McNnbb (2) and D. Dickie, and for Auckland by Miss E. Gubb. The Southland v. Wairarapa B match was a very hard fought game. Wairarapa was very aggressive. Ruahine sprang a- surprise by heating Wellington, hitherto unbeaten, in a very fast contest. The first spell ended in favour of Ruahine 2—nil. In the second half Ruahine had the upper hand, playing with fine combination. The Wellington defence was weak. Feilding disposed of Ashburton by two to one. there being no score in the first spell. The second spell was much moro lively.
Otago registered an easy win over Wanganui by seven —nil. The score indicates the merits of the. teams. Otago excelled in combination and stick work. Scorers were Misses O. Vidal (4), M. Scott, R. Hunt and R. Kreft.
Marlborough caused a surprise by fully extending the K Cup holder. Eastern, and playing a drawn game, one-all. Eastern did not field its strongest side, playing four emergencies.
In the Manawatu v. Taranaki game Manawatu was aggressive and persistent in attack, but lacked combination; on tlio afternoon’s play Taranaki was the better team. Taranaki had a
sound defence and played better hockey, but failed to finish movements. Scorers for Manawatu were Misses E. Highfiold and W. Ransom and for Taranjjlri Miss B. Watkins. Bush maintained its unbeaten record by defeating Wairarapa A 3—2.
