TX a recent speech, Mr Neville Chamberlain; x Chancellor of the Ex chequer: said that improved methods ‘ of production by machinery meant that when the recovery did come not so many people would be used to make the same number of articles as would have been the case ten years ago. . keep away from the idea that unemployment is only very temporary and that perhaps in a month or a year, when prosperity has come back, it will mean that all these people will be employed again, and therefore it is not worth while to start any long-term schemes for their welfare. “I believe that if we realise that while many will get work there will still be many who will be unable to find regular employment, we shall see that it is our duty to think about their welfare while they are unemployed and never mind whether a scheme can be put into operation to-day or in six months-—it is worth while doing it for a condition of affairs of which we cannot see the end."
