"Seen in the Shops”

Now is the time to begin knitting cardigans and pullovers tor tennis wear. Cream is always good, it always looks so fresh, hut pastel shades are attractive too and this year very bright colours will be very much worn. McGrruer Bone’s have just opened up a, big shipment of wools in ah weights and all colours. Hero are some ol the new shades —sapphire, malachite, popcorn and mandarin. If you wish to make one of the new sleeveless jumpers in a lacy stitch it only takes three balls. There are many colour combinations and a big range of Aotea Petone and Kaiapoi wools. A new line is Wendy 4-ply sock wool, perfect for socks or fine cardigans, while Bairnswear comes in two, three or four ply, and as its name implies, .s ideal for kiddies’ woollies. „ * * * *

In all the new houses you will find that the money is put into convenience space and not into decorat.ou. Lines are very simple, but proportions are good. Homes of this type call for furnishings as rich as you can afford, but elegantly simple as to line. A bedroom suite of oak at Symes’ would be admirable m any room, but ideal as part of a modern furnishing scheme The suite consists of a bed. dressing-table with a long central mirror, unframed, with drawer below, a wardrobe giving ample cupboard space with another long drawer, a pedestal cupboard. A small bedside table and a stool for the dressing table might accompany the suite and complete the whole of the furniture required. The bed has no end at the bottom, just a narrow foot board finished either side with an elegantly proportioned post. The head ov the bed follows the lines of old French beds. The whole suite of oak is beau-1 tifullv artistic and finished impeccably. * * * * * i

An early Biblical story is the history of the long trek of the Iraelites through the deserts till they came to Canaan, that land “flowing with milk and honey”—a metaphor suggesting wealth and comfort, smiling skies and kindly seasons. The metaphor may very ’ happily be applied to Taranaki where the land seems to be flow -ng with more milk than can be used and where honey—that food of the fames—is at its prime. It is the purest form of sugar, it can never be mended at least, I don’t think so—it is cheap—why every farm hasn’t got its colony of bees with a co-operative refining plant I can’t think. The flavour of the honev which conies mainly from clover in' this district is particularly good. The GULP stock Taranaki honey at its best; it is a local industry so buy all you can. *-* * *

The wonderful summer we had last year will encourage many people to iilan for a camping holiday this year It is such an inexpensive trip and the whole family can go at no greater cost than if they all stayed at home, provided, of course, they own a car and some Damping equipment and allow so much for benzine. Tents and cainpiner gear can he slowly 'accumulated through the year and it is surprising how little is ’ absolutely necessary- .So far as benzine is concerned, it need not cost much because there are plenty of good camping spots within a tew

miles in several directions. Nou that second-hand cars are so cheap, there is, certain to be a big increase in campers this summer. The second-hand cai however, often needs a new battery, By going to Davy’s you can get an Ajax battery installed and so well tested that you not only get wonderful service, but you have appreciated the value of your car if you think of selling it again. , « *

George and Doughty’s have begun rebuilding and it is well to remember that their present entrance is through the old Red Castle rooms. The new premises are go in ex to mark a step forward in tovm development and will provide every facility for effective display and efficiency of service. In the meantime the difficulties of business while rebuilding will be minimised by reducing stock to the lowest point practicable and. the reorganisation ol staff will be more satisfactorily arranged if there is practically no carry-ovei in the show room; so customers new and old will benefit. Rows and row s of frocks, costumes, long coats, short coats, blouses, jumpers, cardigans, already reduced to half price, are to be marked down to half half price—a wonderful opportunity, specially as the firm never carries old stock. One special snip is a frock of beige with a green spotted top and a little coatee having double cape Lets over the frock sleeves. Now is the time to buy cheaply, not only summer frocks, biit lightweight woollen frocks, extra skirts and cardigans for autumn wear or tool summer days, of which we often have many. *****

The lovely richness of port, the golden gleam of sherry, the “beaded bub hies winking at . the brim” of champagne and sparkling burgundy, the lovely green of creme de menthe —how these lose, liow they fade, when served in coloured glass, however fashionable ; how they glow’, how T they sparkle through goblets of clear cut crystal. Even plain water—put it in a coloured iug or in just an. ordinary glass jug. What is it? Just water from the tap. But put it in a cut crystal jug and what does it become? It is the dew at sunrise; it is the rain falling through a shaft of sunlight. A big bowl of crimson roses in the centre of the table the plainest meal would be a feast. Gerrand’s have a lovely crystal table lamp, jugs, goblets, wineglasses—everything for a perfect table down to salt cellars in crystal. * * * * *

Blouses have been very largely superseded by the lacy wool jumpers. Even for summer they are going to be very much worn and the new ones just opened at Harrop’is are perfectly lovely. They are very fine and lacy that they can almost be drawn through the proverbial wedding ring. They are perfect for 'travelling. One 1 noticed is a real string colour made with raglan sleeves, the shoulder seams being decorated with an outline o. flame-coloured crosses. Tiny touches of the same flame embroidery finish the collar—very charming. There aie manv in all colours, another very at-t'-ac-tive one being in pale blue and white. A range of odd skirts are show:ng, too. among which is the right thing to wear with each jumper.
