MORE BEEF AT WESTFIELD. REDUCTION IN VALUES. (United Cress Association —By Electric Telegrapn Cxipy right.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 23. There was a large offering of oeei at Westfield to-day, about 750 head being yarded, compared with 540 last week. The demand was. not keen and values for all classes showed a reducaion of about 2s per 1001 b. Extra choice ox beef sold to 18s per 1001 b; choice and prune 14s to 17s, secondary and plain 12s to 13s, primc_ young cow and heifer beef 15s to 17s, and ordinary cow beef 10s to 13s. Extra heavy prime steers made £8 to £8 10s, heavy prime £7 to £7 15s, lighter prime £0 to £6 17s Gd, light prime £4 1,5 s to £5 los, small and unfinished £3 17s Gd to £4 7s Gd, extra heavy prime young cows and heifers £4 10s to £4 i7s Gd, heavy prime £4 to £4_7s Gd, lighter prime £3 5s to £3 15s, other billable cows £2 to £3.
Average numbers of sheep were penned. The inquiry was a shade easier, I and lower values were recorded. Prime • wethers made 18s to 27s Gd, unfinished 12s to 18s, prime ewes 15s to 23s Gd, unfinished 12s 6d to 15s, prime hoggets 13s to 25s 1 Gd, unfinished Os to 12s Gd. A few spring lambs- were yarded, Small numbers of calves came forward, the; .market being "particularly short of runners and heavy veaiers. There was a considerable rise jn values. Runners 45s to 84s, veaiers 27s to 85s. Pigs were also m good supply and values firmed under good competition. Baconers 38s to 395, porkers 23s to 395, large stores 20s to 235. SHEEP FIRM AT ADDINGTON. CATTLE MARKET DEPRESSED. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 23. Heavy consignments from the North Island and the southern provinces of the South Island appeared in the fat stock sections at Addington market today. The North Island sent cattle, and 24 trucks of fat sheep arrived from Southland. The fat sheep auction was firm, with special departments showing further advances. The fat cattle market was depressed by the oversupply. Store sheep: A big yarding, and the demand good at late rates. Values were: Good two-tooth lialfbred ewes, to 21s; ordinary, 14s to 14s 9d; good S.M., 13s Gd to los 9d; ordinary, to 13s; and f.m., 9s to 12s; aged and inferior, 5s to 7s; ewes and lambs (all counted), 7s 3d to 8s 4d; two-tooth wethers, 11s to 13s 4d; good threequarterbred ewe hoggets, to ISs,- ordinr ry, 13s; ordinary wether hoggets, to 9s.
Spring lambs: An entry of 43 head. Tne to;> price was 29s lOd. Fat sheep: An entry of 4100. There was a strong demand for light and medium weight ewes, which advanced Is Gd a head. Young wethers advanced i f Is a head. Other classes maintained late rates. Values were: Extra prime heavy wethers, to 34s lOd; prime, 27s to 30s; medium weight, 24s to 26s Gd; 1 ordinary, 2l's to 23s 6d; light, 18s to 20s Gd; extra, prime heavy ewes, to 28s 1Od; prime, 23s to 265; medium weight, 20s to 22s Gd; ordinary, 17s to 19s Gd; light, 12s Gd to IGs Gd; extra prime hoggets, to 27s 7d.
Fat cattle: An entry of 451 head included 7S head from Gisborne and 100 head from southern centres. The sale slumped after a firm opening, with a general decline or 10s to 15s a head for cows, and up to £1 a head for steers and heifers in the latter half of the auction.
Best beef made from 24s to 26s per 1001 b; good, 21s to 235; heavy-weight, 17s to 20s; good heifers, to 21s; medium quality, 13s to 17s; rough, down to 11s Gd. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers, to £l3 7s Gd; prime heavy, £8 15s to £lO 15s; medium weight, £7 15s to £9 10s; ordinary, £5 5s to £7 10s; light, to £5; extra prime heifers, to £lO 7s Gd; prime, £G to £8; medium, £4 to £5 15s; light, to £3 15s; extra prime cows, to £9 7s Gd; prime, £5 to £7; medium, £3 5s to £4 15s; light, to £3. Fat pigs:' A medium entry, with bacon a shade easier. Porkers sold irregularly. Values were: Choppers, 21s to £4 12s Gd; baconers, 34s Gd to 44s Gd; heavy, 47s Gd to 55s Gd; extra heavy, to £2 19s Gd; average price per! lb, 3fd to 4d. Porkers, 21s to 26s Gd; heavy, 29s Gd to 32s Gd; average price per lb, 3Jd to 44d.
BURNSIDE SALE DULL. FALL IN CATTLE PRICES. DUNEDIN, Aug. 23. The fat cattle entry at Burnside today totalled 215 head. Competition was not keen at any part of the sale, a further drop of 10s per head taking place. The top price obtained for best bullocks was £ll 17s 6d, and for fat heifers up to £8 7.s Gd was obtained, while fat cows made up to £7 7s 6d.
The yarding of 220 fat sheep was of mixed quality, with a. larger percentage of prime wethers, than for several weeks. The sale for wethers opened at prices practically the same as those at last sale, but values firmed later and then again receded toward the end. At this stage a drop of fully Is per head was recorded. Several trucks of extra prime ewes met keen, competition, and last week’s rates were fully maintained. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 32s 3d, prime heavy from 26s to 28s Gd, prime from 22s to 24s Gd, medium and light from 18s to 21s. Extra prime heavy ewes sold to 28s 7d, prime heavy from 23s to 25s Gd, medium from 18s to 21s, and light from 13s to IGs Gd.
An exceptionally small yarding of store cattle comprised mainly graziers’ aiid honor cows. On account of the small entry a. steady sale was experienced. A line of.biack polled veaiers was keenly competed for. In the dairy section' about GO head were offered, consisting for the most part of old cows and late calvers. Sales were difficult to make, only young cows dose to profit meeting with any demand. In the pig section 111 fats were forward, porkers comprising the bulk of the entry. Competition at the start was keen at last week’s prices, hut values receded toward the close. The top price for porkers was £2 4s. Good bacon pigs were in short supply and realised -up to £3 per head. There was a small entry of store pige of very indifferent quality, but the yarding met fairly good competition.
