ELTHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL

•MONTHLY" MEETING HELD. GENERAL BUSINESS AND REPORTS. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held last evening in Eltham, the Mayor (Mr Ira J. Bridger) occupying the chair. Also present Tvere: ‘Crs. Rickards, Trask, Drabble, Whiting, Ricketts, Lewis, Gawith, and Valintine, also the town clerk (Mr A. J. McPherson) and the heads of departments. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Penhall. A letter was received from the secretary of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce asking the council to reconsider its decision not to be represented at a chamber of commerce meeting on August 22. It was decided to ask the Mayor and Cr. Ricketts to represent the council. The Hawera County Council wrote asking, that the council be represented at a conference of all local bodies in the Hawera hospital district for the purpose of discussing the valuation question. The Mayor and Cr. Valintine were appointed. Recommendations tabled by the general purpose committee were adopted as follows: (1) That in- connection with an application for a reduction of hall charges the request be not granted; (2) that an application for a remission of the 10 per cent, penalty charge on rates be not granted. The committee reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the State Coal Depot for a year’s supply of coal; -that the New Plymouth Cycle Club had been granted permission as in other years, to conduct the round-the-mountain road itice over the streets of the borough and that the Inglewood Cycle Club had been granted permission to ruu a cycle road race over the streets of the borough. The treasurer reported that the sum of £lll2- was received during the month of July and accounts amounting to £1905 had been approved and passed for payment. "~ The abattoir manager (Mr M. Bourkc) reported that 254 head of stock had been salughtered at the abattoirs last month. No infectious diseases were reported by the health inspector (Mr R. Gooding) during July. The gas manager (Mr A. Blackmore) reported that 554,000 feet of gas had been sold, as compared with 542,400 for the same period last year. £6O worth of fittings had been sold, including one cooker.

TOWN MAINTENANCE.

The overseer (Mr J. II Williams) stated that mefal patching was carried out on Conway Road, also on Clifford Road. Tar patching was done on Mountain Road, and the approaches to each end of the Mangawhero stream bridge were raised and tar-sealed. The fence at the corner of Castle Street and Mangawhero Road was shifted back. The earth removed was carted to the dump section. Chipping the growth off gravel paths was being attended to, and in places the forming of paths was being carried out. Screenings were being spread on all paths where required. Men working on relief were employed on beneficial work throughout the borough, cleaning drains, forming paths and cleaning up the cemetery. A.ll the-small trees in the Soldiers ! Memorial Park were being cleaned, and new trees rdanted.

The traffic inspector (Mr A. E. Lethbridge) stated that all drivers stopped had their licenses. In most cases lorry owners increased their licenses when they knew they were carrying over- 1 weight. Three notices were issued to 1 people to have their hedges trimmed, j and four notices to have yards clean-; ed. Four heavy traffic license fees have been collected. Twenty-five driving licenses were issued, making a total of 300 for this year. At this time last year 297 licenses were issued. Three permits were issued during the month for alterations to buildings. Eight head of stock were impounded. A review of routine work in the* parks and reserve* was submitted by the caretaker.
