Mr. J. W. Hailey, of Auckland, and formerly of Wanganui, is judge of the elocutionary section at the ’Wellington competitions. Hie number of entries, however, is so large (3600) that assistance has been necessary and Mrs. Bailey has been appointed assistant judge. Assistance was given to 50 families in Hawera this morning by the distribution of rations to. Hawera. registered unemployed on their stand-down week. The following commodities were made up into parcels and issued in sizes according to- the number of children in each family: 251 b tea, 2101 b sugar, 3101!)' flour, 1101 b oatmeal, 5511) butter and 72 loaves of bread (coupons). In addition the Hawera Citizens’ Relief Committee distributed 5001 b table potatoes. Several pounds of tea and sugar, some eggs and half a ease each of sandwiches and sausage rolls were removed without authority from the Winter Show Buildings in Hawera during the early hours of Friday morning, at the conclusion of the Mayor’s Charity Ball. The goods were left over from supper the evening before and were packed away in readiness for the children’s carnival last evening. It is believed that some person or persons concealed themselves in one of the halls until just before the buildings were locked at three o’clock and when all was quiet raided the kitchen for food, leaving by way of one of the big doors which was found unlatched by members of the committee who returned late in the day. Food appears to hate been the niaiji consideration, for a large quantity of table cutlery and china, was left untouched.
