KAPONGA

1 HOCKEY DANCE. (From Our Own -Correspondent.) The final of the series of fortnightly dances under the auspices of the combined hockey clubs at Kaponga was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday when there was a large attendance. ALusic was played by Aliss AI. Guy (Matapu) and extras by Miss Rogers. Alcssrs F. Albon, R. Noonan and A r . Betts were Al.’sC. The various trophies of the club were on exhibition. They consisted of the Taranaki Championship .Shield and Catran Cup, Peebles Cup (5-a-side tourney at Eltham), tlie Winter Cup (seven-aside at Hawera on June 3), the McKenzie Cup, won outright by the club (Kaponga tournament), and the club championship banner, upon which seven wins are recorded. Novelty dances during the evening were won by Aliss Doris Guy and Air [John Hey (Alonte Carlo), Air J. Melville and Aliss I. Atelville (statue waltz), and Aliss D. Guy and Mr S. Palmer (Alonte Carlo). During the evening the ladies’ club took the opportunity of making a presentation to Aliss Hazel Bradford, an old member of the' team, who is shortly to be married. The presentation was made by Airs AV. Carrington, who referred 'to Aliss Bradford’s long association with the club and her skill as a playing member of the team. GENERAL. The last but one of the Croquet Club’s flag five hundred afternoons was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon when the prizes were won by Alesdames Cook, AVilliams, Evans and Kehely. Hostesses for the afternoon were Alesdames N. Gardner and Dawson.

Air and Airs R. 0. Alellow were host and hostess at an evening held at their residence, Eltharn Road, on Alonday evening to welcome home Air and Ali-s Syd. Williams. There was a large gathering of friends, including visitors from Rahotu, AJanaia and other nearby towns. Tlhe evening (was spent mainly in dancing to music by Mr Jack Hooker a'ncl Aliss AlcGregor and community singing was also enjoyed.

FOOTBALL CLUB’S BALL

LARGE DANCE ASSEAIBLY,

The Kaponga. F'oofball Club scored another success i'll its long list of annual balls when, despite many counter attractions, there was a splendid attendance at the Town Hall on Thursday evening. A happy crowd danced all" night to excellent music played by Jack Hooker’s orchestra. Air excellent, supper was provided by the ladies of the district.

The x>resident of the club, Air J. H. W. Gardner, thanked all for their presence. The committee was very gratified at such a large attendance, he said. It was only once a year that the club asked the public for its support and it was pleasing to see such a ready response. He heartily thanked the ‘ladies for the great assistance given also the musicians for their splendid music. He called for three cheers for the ladies who had assisted.

The hall decorations, which were the work of Airs A. AV. Anderson, were carried out- in a maypole design of amber, black and white streamers, the letters K.F.C. being set out in bright coloured globes in the ceiling. ■Extras were given by Misses I. Eliason, AI. Lilley, U. AVest, E. O’Dea, and O’Sullivan'. The (Al.’sC. were Messrs AV. G. Oran and J. ITammerslcy. A Alonte Carlo was won by Air Stables and Miss TJ. AA r est anl a spot dance by Air P. Alurphy and Aliss B. Alurphy. A competition was won by Air J. O’Sullivan.

RETIRING SCHOOLMASTER. PUPILS ’ PRESENTATIONS. A pleasant function took place at tlie Kaponga School on Thursday afternoon when the teachers and scholars gathered together for the purpose of saying goo<l-'l>yo to the retiring headmaster, Mr W. J. A. Parnell. On behalf of the pupils of the school Master Jack Briscoe presented Mr Parnell with a leather pocket wallet, saying that the little present carried with it their best wishes for Air Parnell’s future health and happiness. On behalf of the football and cricket teams Master Cyril Taylor (captain of tlu football team) handed Mr Parnell a crystal bowl, to be given to Airs Parnell as an expression or their appreciation of Airs Parnell’s kindness in taking them to other towns to play footbail and cricket.

Mr Parnell, in his reply, thanked the scholars for their thoughtfulness, especially as regards their present for Airs Parnell, which lie knew would be much appreciated by her. He had enjoyed his work with them all and he was sorry to be leaving. Air Parnell wished them all good luck and success in their future spheres.
