QRUTGHJNGS AND PIECES. WELLINGTON COMPETITION. (By Telegraph-Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. In view of the recent rise in wool values much interest was attached to the winter sale of erutchings, pieces and oddments Feld to-day by Wellington wool brokers, this being the first auction .since the close of the roster of sales fast April. Seven catalogues offered comprised over 4000 bales, the bulk of which was erutchings and pieces, there being about 800 bales of fleece wools. There was a fairly representative bench of buyers, amongst whom competition was free and at times very keen. Ail good lines met with spirited bidding. Continental buyers and Australian and local mills took the bulk of the best erutchings, for which there is excellent demand. It is understood there were some good ouyiug orders from Japan. Local scourers and fellmongers showed no hesitation in securing their requirements. Passings were comparatively few and over 90 per cent, of the total offering was quitted at- auction. The sale reflected the recent general improvement.in the market. Clutching. s .sold generally at one penny to 2u a lb higher than in April, while fleece wools which were passed then at d to 3if cl sold to-day at up to ojd and in some cases a shade better. Super crossbred erutchings sold at up to 64c1, medium to good to old and seedy and inferior to 4d. Crossbred pieces and bellies made to sd. There was keen competition for small lines of fine wools. Two small lots of Southdowns made 12-Jd and 12 Jcl resiiectively, and fine halfbreds went to Ifp c | Fine crossbreds sold freely at 61 d to Sid and medium crossbreds s|d to 61d. ’ Lambs’ wool also sold well, tile best .sorts making 9d to 12Jcl and mediums 6cl to BJd.
