CANTERBURY DEFEATED WELLINGTON SIDE TOO GOOD, PLAY ON HEAVY GROUND FOURTEEN, POINTS TO SIX (By Telegraph— ?resf Association.! WELLINGTON, Aug. o.
The touring: Canterbury Rugby team was defeated by Wellington at Athletic Panic to-day by 14 points to G. Following heavy rain adl the' previous day and overnight, the ground was in a greasy condition Ibut there was no rain during the play, except for five minutes after the opening of the second spell. Canterbury was favoured with a strong southerly wind in the first spoil but did not exploit it nearly enough, confining the attack mainly to the forwards, who met more than their match in the Wellington pack. Under the conditions .sound back play was almost impossible, though one or two backs on each side rose superior to the conditions, notably Mart lock and Dunshea (Canterbury) and Ivill'een and Robins (Wellington). After a' good beginning Wellington lost its dominant position in the forwards for the greater period of the first spell,- but once it got the weather behind it the- team was almost continually on the attack. It wais not a day on” which the merits of any team could be accurately judged. Wellington played soundly both baick and forward, and many of the young players in the Canterbury team give promise of developing good Rugby form. They should mould into a sound side by the time the mare important Ranfurly Shield fixtures come up for decision. As Was only to he expected under the conditions several of the points scored were oif the tacky variety. Robins opened the scoring for Wellington with a. gift try after Hart had failed to connect with a speculator, _ and Ha zel hurst evened the score with, a penalty goal an which a hairline decision for Obstruction by McLean was somewhat in dispute. Canterbury went into the lead wit'll the best movement of the day when Andrews and Cottrell opened up a fine movement for Dunshea to score. Canterbury was leading at hull-time by six to three.
Soon after opening tne -second spell Fuller evened the score with a penalty goal. Dellabaroa put Wellington ahead with a try from a. very fine solo effort from half-way. Fuller converting. DelI aha cm scored again from a loose rush, making the fine score 14 to 0.
