LOWGARTH FARMERS’ UNION
ANNUAL SOCIAL HELD. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The annual social of the Farmers’ Union at Lowgartli was held on Friday evening at the hall and attracted a large gathering from many parts- of South Taranaki. Amongst those present were Messrs E. J. Betts, president of the South Taranaki Provincial Executive, Mr P. Tito, district organiser, J. M. Smith and C. Haynes, of the Department of Agriculture, and representatives of the Stratford. Elthain, Cardiff, Matapu, Okaiawa and Mangatoki branches of the union. Apologies for absence were received from Mr H. Betts and Mr Trotter, Stratford. Mr E. K. Cameron, Hawera. and M r A. T. Sulzberger, of Lowgartli.
The president, Mr F. Wilkin, extended a. cordial welcome to the. visitors-. Mr J. M. Smith congratulated the district on the success of its competitions. The" outstanding feature., lie said, was Mr A. T. Sulzberger’s success in gainin'-.- the Sutton Cup for mangolds. This spoke well for the Lowgarth district. The department looked on these field competitions as very useful to the industry. Mr C. Haynes then presented the certificates as follows: Soft turnips.—R. Jones (1141 points) 1. A. T. Mr Harkness. of Newton King, Ltd., in presenting the Sutton Cup. su'd that 124 tons of mangolds fr> the acre was a wonderful crop, and it was a tribute' to the work Mr Sulzibei had put in. The farmer, he said, had now to be specially equipped for his job in life. Mr Betts and Mr Tite also congratulated thoi residents on the success of their competitions and the excellent wav thev had organised the evening s entertainment. , , , ~ Mr 'Will-an added lus thanks to the ladies for tlieir assistance in catering and also to the Press. Mrs A. A. Piper, president- of the Low ,r >-arth branch of the "W.D.F.TL. 1 hanked Mr Willnn for his- remarks and said that the ladies felt happy to ho able to assist. Sono-s were contributed by Mr J) • Silver"and Mrs Sextus and dance music was plaved by Vinson’s Ambassadors Orchestra, extras being given hv Mrs piper and Miss Gwen Silver.
