KING’S BIRTHDAY SPORTS

TOURNAMENT AT MANAIA FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL. On Sla.tutrday next (June 3) a schools’ football and basketball tournament will be held at Manaia. Arrangements were finalised at a meeting of the combined committee on Friday, when Mr T. A. Bridge presided and the secretary, Mr F. Garner, reported that already seven entries had been received far the primary schools football and a similar number for basketball. Four teams had' entered for the secondary schools football and. two for the secondairy schools basketball. Entries would be received until Wednesday night, and it was believed that there would be a good number of teams in the competition.

The .provision of tea, pies and sandwiches at a nominal charge for the competitors was discussed and arrangements ware completed for these to. be .served bv the ladies' committee. Obtaining tea and sugar was left to the secretary. Mrs J. Young and Messrs Parry and Butler were deputed to provide coppers. It was decided to approach the Rugby Union to provide football referees. The refereeing of the basketball wais left to the teachers, Mr D. G. Sherson agreeing to act as supervisor of the basketball. Mr Garner was appointed to supervise the football. Various other officials were appointed. The band! members were appointed to mark out and prepare the ■ sports grounds. It Was left to the secretary to procure a football and a basketball as trophies. The) chief trophies are the Yarrow Cups, the Bennett and Sutton Cup and the Herbert Smith. Trust Cups. The holders of the trophies are : Primary schools football : Winners, Yarrow Cup, Pnngarehu; runners-up, Herbert Smith Trust Cup. Toko. Primary schools’ basketball : Winners, Yarrow Cup.
