(From Our Own Correspondent). PICNIC AT THE BEACH. SCHOOL AND SETTLERS’ DAY. The T'e Roti school and settlers’ picnic was held on Friday at the Kaupokonui beach. The clay was fine and the children were conveyed to the beach in motor buses and a large number of private cars were also used, there being a big attendance of settlers and their friends. The function was most isuccessiul due to thte exceil lent arrangements made by the committee consisting! of Messrs. Hurley (chairman), M. Condon (secretary), H. Cleaver (starter), Coleman and Henry (handicappers), Mortlock and Lee, assisted by Morneson (judges), Bloor (nail driving), Hitchcock and Bluett (chainstepping), Brunold, P. Clement and L. Grierson and a band of ladies who attended to the lunch and afternoon tea. Details of the sports events are as follow: _ Small girls’ race. —N. Chisnall 1. L. Clements 2, D. Hills 3. Girls 8 and under. —Joan Lee 1, Joan Thorpe 2, P. Budkin 3. Intermediate girls.—M. Rudkin 1, J. Cleaver 2. L. Hurley 3.

Married ladies’ race. —Mrs Parslow 1, Mrs Stokes 2, Mrs Chisnall 3. Married men’s ace.—Mr Alexander 1, H. Cleaver 2, L. Hitchcock 3. The two favourites “fell.” Ladies’ chainstepping.—Mrs Alexander 1, Mrs Lee 2. Men’s chainstepping.—R. Druce 1, E. Hills 2.
Length of string, 17ft. 11^-in. —Miss Fail-brother 18ft. 1, Mrs Morrison 2, Miss Nicol 3. Ladies’ nail driving.—Mrs McAsey L, Mrs Bloor 2. A competition among the pupils of the school for a- model aeroplane, made and donated by Mr. Alexander was won by Miss Joy Cleaver. Mr. Alexander also donated the prize for the ladies’ nail driving and prizes for the gills’ and boys’ senior and junior division events were donated by Nurse Wilkinson.
