WINOOKA’S FUTURITY STAKES GAINE CARRINGTON THIRD (United Press, Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 26. The cx-New Zealander, G. Price, trained the winning double, Sliakuni and Malt-dale, at the Caulfield races yesterday afternoon. Results are:— WOOD CLIFF HANDICAP. Of £SOO. One mile and three furlongs. Maltdale, 7 5 (Duncan) 1 Rulanut, 7.8 (Elliott) 2 Cupidity, 7.8 (Foster) 3 Twenty-five started, including Peter Jackson and King; Colossus. Rulanut led to the straight but Maltdale’s challenge prevailed by half a head with the third horse a" head away. Pretzel was fourth. Time, 2.ISA. FUTURITY STAKES. Of £2IOO. Seven furlongs. Captivation led from a good start but was soon overhauled by Winooka_ Chatham moved up to third entering the railway stretch, Gain Carrington being last. “Waltzing Lily was within a length of -Winooka near the threefurlong ’ post but thereafter Winooka had the race in hand and won by three and a half lengths. Gaine Carrington finished -strongly a length and a half away. Greenline was fourth and Waterline next. Time, 1.245. An inquiry was opened concerning the cause of Gaine -Carrington’s loss of position a furlong from the start. Evidence was taken and the inquiry was adjourned until Wednesday. This is regarded as an indication that; the stewards on the track noticed something which may spoil trouble for some one.

Following the running of the Waihou Handicap at Te Aroha on Saturday an inquiry was .opened concerning the running of Chief Cook, who finished third. As a result P. IV. Scallv, the trainer, and G. Jenkins, the jockey, were disqualified for six months. Chief Cook’s owner, Mr E. Mon-; tague, is to appear before the committee to-morrow.
