MAROONED ON ALPS
SAFE RETURN OF PARTY. OUT FOR ELEVEN DAYS. (By Telegraph—Press Association;. GREYMOUTH, Feb. 19. A party of four mountaineers yesterday reached the Franz Josef Hostel after being for 11 days on the southern Alps. They were marooned for ten days on Pioneer Ridge by storms. Miss Kathleen Gardiner and Mr Burnie, both of the English Alpine Club, Chief Guides R. William's (Hermitage) and J. Pope (Franz Josef Hostel) left the Hermitage on February 8 intending to climb (Mount Tasman, but a series of storms forced them to camp on the ridge, where their tent was (blown down and had ‘to he set up in a ischrund or cave.
As they had supplies for' six days only three guides went out from Waiho with food, but were unable to reach the party. Going out again later they found the party eat route to Waiho, where no great anxiety was felt during their absence as it was known the party would dig in a schrun'd.
