RAILWAYMEN’S PICNIC

EXCURSION TO OPUNAKE POPULAR. ANNUAL 'GATHERING Favoured with ideal conditions, the annual picnic of the Hawera railway staff was held yesterday at Opunake, a gathering of approximately 350 consisting of raihvaymen, their families and members of the general public be-ing-conveyed by special train to the popular resort w-here a delightful day w-as spent on the beach and its environs. Sunshine with a mild ‘temperature ruled throughout the day ,and a light breeze was of sufficient strength to raise an appreciable though not. too boisterous surf, tho pleasant conditions being a marked contrast with those ruling the previous week, when it was necessary to postpone the outing. , • Excellent arrangements in catering for the convenience of the pienicers were made by a large committee, of which Mr L, Toy was the chairman and Afr G. 11. J. Boesley the secretary. Hot water was provided free to the various parties. Particularly generous provision w-as made by the committee for the juveniles, who made up the greater portion of the gathering. On the outward train journey each child w-as given a package of sweets and at the beach cordials and ice creams were served free of charge, tho abundance and popularity of the supply being indicated by the tally of over 2000 cones of ice cream which were handed out from the committee’s booth.

A considerable part of the afternoon was devoted to a programme of sports w-hich attracted keen competition for liberal prizes. Results of the events w-ere as follow:

Single men’s 100 yards handicap.— W. M. White 1, E. Fleet 2. Single ladies’ 75 yards handicap.— Misses L. Clegg 1, E. Sheehan 2. Loco and maintenance staffs’ 100 yards handicap.—A. Barnett I', T. Norris 2.
