UNEMPLOYED RELIEF

HAWEKA SELF-HELP CLUB. MONTHLY MEETING HELD. Various matters affecting the internal administration of the Hawera Unemployed Self-Help Club were discussed a.t a general meeting attended by 30 members at the Hawera Borough Council Chambers last evening. Adjutant H. Mackenzie was elected chairman. The honorary secretary (Mr Evan EA r ansj read a letter from Mr J. E. Campbell, who tendered his resignation as trustee owing to 1 his absentee from the •district on holiday. Mr Campbell expressed the hope that the cl'ub Avould continue to function: for the benefit of its members. The resignation was accepted with regret and the secretary Avas instructed 1 to fprward a letter to Mr Campbell expressing the club’s appreciation of his services since the inauguration of the self-help campaign in HaAvera. Mr W. C. Fyfe, representing the Hawera Citizens’ Relief Committee, "was in attendance and on being introduced to the members AA*as accorded a AA r ann welcome. Mr J. Edmonston', also l actively interested in the club, sent an apology for absence. FolJoAving a brief discussion Messrs Fytfc and Edmonston were appointed joint trustees in place of Mr Campbell. Tire chairman submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure for the month and showed that the club AA r as in a stronger position financially than at the December meeting. Owing to members of the executive obtaining Avorlc and withdrawing from the club an election avus necessary to fill two A’acancies, Messrs. J. Drvnan and T. W. J. Dowdle being returned with substantial majorities. There were four other candidates. Similarly the withdrawal .of the former librarian necessitated' fresh appointments, Mr Dry nan and Mr Yorko being proposed and accepted- as senior and librarian' respectively. The desire for direct representation of the unemployed at every meeting of the HaAvera Unemployed Relief Committee was expressed by members. It was mentioned, that Mr <l. McAneny did not always receive notices of meetings' and therefore could not attend. A resolution was passed requesting that Mr McAneny be given every opportunity of attending the meetings and that he furnish a monthly .report to the unemployed. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks tc Adjutant Mackenzie for presiding was carried' by acclamation.
