TAVO HURT IN SMASH.
ONE IN SERIOUS CONDITION.
’ AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. Two prominent local broadsiders, E. J. P. Day and D. Mattson, were hurt in a spectacular smash at Western Springs speedway last evening. Both received concussion and Mattson also had one shoulder injured. They were admitted to the Auckland hospital and Day’s condition was later fairly serious, although Mattson’s was not serious.
Day fell while leading in 'the second of a series of teams races and attempted to reach the grass area in the centre of the track. Two other competitors, W. Herbert and W. Allen, avoided him, but he ran directly in the path of Mattson, whose machine struck him heavily. Both Mattson and Day were thrown to the ground and rendered unconscious. Day was carried to the ambulance, while Mattson, although conscious, also required assistance.
Both riders have been successful at earlier meetings this season.
STBATFORD CLUB CONTESTS.
SPILLS AT MANGATOKT.
During the week-end the Stratford Motor Sports Club held a meeting on Mr S. Morgan’s property at Mangatoki where thrills and spills were the order of a programme of four events. The club was allowed the use of an old trotting track, the course being approximately two-fifths of a mile of grass surface partly worn. The track was hard and spills were plentiful, though only two of a serious nature were experienced.
In the final heat of the novice race S. Fenton, riding a Douglas, came oft heavily when his rear tyre burst. He sustained a badly -wrenched knee. J. Crockett, riding, an Ariel, came off and caught his wrist in the chain, -which badly mauled his arm. He received medical attention from a doctor who was present and v r as taken to Stratford, where stitches were inserted. The lap record was won by J. Crockett, riding an Ariel, the time being 35 4-5.5. J. Ebnton was unfortunate, as at the finish of a wonderfully controlled skid, his machine was found to be out of order.
At the conclusion of the day the cup for the lap record was presented to the winner by Mr Morgan. There was a large attendance of spectators.
