LONDON, Jan. 28. “I have not yet overcome my affection for the British Empire, and 1 much prefer that description to the British Commonwealth,” said Mr. •Stanley Bruce, < Australian Resident Minister in London, in proposing the British Commonwealth in accordance ,\ ith the toast list at the Birmingham banquet given by the Jewellers’ am • ilvci\smiths ’ Association. Every Briton overseas lie added, had been thrilled with pride at the courage and integrity shown by the Britsli people during the past two years a-hen British finances had been the most important factor in the affairs oi the Empire and the world. The Ottawa Conference meant a complete revolution for the members o the Empire. Ihe policy which Australia and Canada adopted was a po! icy of sanity. “You were wedded to free trade as chough it were a. god,” Mr. Bruce con•htded, “but wo. were wedded to protection as though it were a super-god.
