PATEA
PICNICS AT DOMAIN. BIG CROWDS ATTEND. Two picnics were held at the Patea Domain on Wednesday, the gatherings being under the auspices respectively of the Women Is Institute and the watersidcrs. Each drew a large crowd of people from town and district, the water, skiers’ gathering also including many from Plymouth and Wintai£l' WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. It was unfortunate that for the annual picnic of the Patea Women s Institute at the Domain many of the institute’s officers were absent on holiday. The task of organisation and catering was thrown on the shoulders of the few members remaining. The children’s races were organised by Mrs G. Laing, while most of the adults were swimming and surfing. Afternoon tea was served at the pavilion, Mr G. Laing tending the supply of hot water. A treasure hunt was won by iMr R. Willis. The honorary secretary, Mrs J. T. Adams, was untiring in her efforts to ensure success or the gathering. WATER SIDE R S ASSEMBLE. Watersidcrs from New Plymouth, Waitara and Patea co-operated for the day’s outing at the combined picnic held at Patea. on Wednesday. The picnic was held in the Domain and visitors were emphatic in their approval -of the suitability of that reserve for such a gathering. The secretary of the watersiders union in New Plymouth, Mr S. Flood, said that the visitors from New Plymouth had never experienced a more enjoyable day. The party from ‘the north, totalling nearly 200/came by train and were met by a fleet of cars and transported to the Domain. Sweets and fruit were distributed to the children on the journey. 'Games and a sports programme, with a tug of war, were organised after lunch by Mr J. Arnott and Mr Gilbert. During the afternoon a team of Maoris 1 under Mr Brougnton entertained the crowd with musical selections. In the tug of war Patea seamen beat the watersiders after a keen struggle and then a New Plymouth team challenged and won in an exciting con- j test. j The Mayor (Mr F. Ramsbottom) thanked the visitors for their ex-. pression of appreciation of the facili-1 ties provided at the Domain and re- ] gretted the absence of the chairman j of the Board, Mr E. F. Hemingway. He hoped that the watersiders would continue to visit the town and enjoy many more pleasant outings.
