Mr. 'W. J. Jordan, member for Manukau, was granted by the House of Representatives yesterday leave of absence for the remainder of the- session on account of ill-health, reports the Press Association.

News has been received by cable at Dunedin of the death at Hobart on Saturdav last of Mr. John Andrew Johnson, M.A., ex-principal of the Teachers’ Training College at Hobart. Mr L. O. Hooker, of Hawera, left ,by* train to-day for Auckland to be present at the marriage of his eldest daughter. Miss Maida Hooker, to Mr George Coxhead, of Hauiraki Plains, Auckland, on Thursday next.

The King has approved of the reappointment for another year of Sir Malcolm Hailey, who lias been Governor of the United Provinces of India for the past five years, states a London cable.

Mr. David Geddie, assistant-man-ao-er of the London office of the Bans of New South Wales, who arrived at Wellington on Monday, is making a motor tour of the North Island. Mr. Geddie will later make a trip through the South Island and return to Wellington about the end of next month. He will sail to Australia by the Maunganui on March 7. Mr. David Pryde, who won the Neu Zealand golf championship " 35 years ago, died suddenly at Wellington on Sunday at the age of 72. Mr. Pryde was born in Scotland, and came to. New Zealand as a young man, startin" in business as a. jeweller at Wellington. In 1903 he went to r edding where he established a business. He was one of the founders of the Feuding Golf Club, and won the local championship several years in succession. He was elected to the Feildmg Borough Council 15 years ago.

Among the passengers on the south bound Taranaki express train at Hawera this morning were Messrs W. C. H.ankinson, of the Dominions Office, London, who is at present on a, tour of New Zealand, and D. ArdiU, or the Internal Affairs Department, Wellington Mr Hankinson yesterday visited a. number of English public school hoys employed on various farms m 5! ortli Taranaki and also inspected the Bell Block aerodrome and .the Moa dairy factory, where manufacturing processes .were watched. North Etgmont hostel was visited, also the oil bores at New Plymouth and Pukekuira Park, with which Mr Han kin sqii was high J delighted. Roth Mr Hankinson and Mr <= Ardill were en route- to Wanganui this morning and will proceed to Chateau Tougariro, thence to Auckland, where Mr Hankinson will board the Aorangi on. February 7 on his return to England via Canada.
