COMPULSORY WHEAT POOL
OPPOSITION AT WELLINGTON AUCKLAND PROTEST SUPPORTED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. Emphatic condemnation of the setting up of the Wheat Purchase Board to handle the monopoly created by the institution of the compulsory wheat pool was voiced at a meeting of the council of tlie Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-night. The Auckland chamber asked for support of a resolution recently passed in which the Auckland chamber expressed the fear that “it was futile to protest against the Government’s continued cynical violation of the lights of the consuming public at the behest and for the benefit of a small produciii2 minority which had for so longbeen sheltered from the economic blast,” and warning the Government that continual interference . with ordinary commercial and economic processes was intensifying the effects of the depression and hindering a -recovery. The Auckland chamber also pointed out that it was extraordinary that the Board of Trade Act, designed to protect the New Zealand public against monopolies, -should be made a vehicle for creating the most complete monopoly the Dominion had yet seen. Mr Matheson (president) and Mr J. Pearce Luke said the matter would be dealt, with this week by the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
A motion that the Wellington chamber endorse the resolution of .the Auckland chamber was carried.
