DEFEAT OF BOXER COOK
FIERCE FIGHT WITH GERMAN. BOOING GREETS DECISION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 23. After 12 rounds at the Albert Hall the German boxer Walter Neusel outpointed George Cook, the Australian. Cook was accompanied by his wife, who kissed him twice as he entered the ring.. 1 Neusel opened by punching powerfully and rattled Cook with three uppercuts. The Australian, who was fleetfooted, punished' the German with his favourite left-hook to the jaw. Neusel exploited his longer reach, scoring several lefts, but failed to evade Cook and stopped repeated heavy rights to the jaw. Cook’s greater experience often non-plussed the German. The fight continued to be even. Cook in the seventh round forced the Gorman to the corner and sent a terrific right to the jaw, Neusel’s counters not affecting the stocky Australian, who was oven more vigorous in the fighting that followed. Cook was magnificent, leaving nothing to chance, and exhibiting a sound defence. Cook in the ninth round rushed the German to the ropes hut was steadied by a tremendous left hook, the German scoring with both hands, while in the tenth, vicious rights sent the Australian’s head. hack. He was apparently beaten, but he returned, fighting like a fury. In the last round both stood exchanging punches. Cook in his eagerness to land a terrific right in the 12th round swung himself to the floor. The decision was greeted by several minutes’ booing. . When it was announced that Goo a is 35 to-day the Australian had a wonderful ovation.
