NORMANBY GLADIOLI SHOW

SESSIONS PROVE POPULAR

LARGE EVENING ASSEMBLY

The popularity of the show of gladioli, instituted at Norman'by for the first time fast year, was indicated by the excellent entries/ received and the big attendance of visitors, the evening session -yesterday attracting a particularly large assembly. Hearty approval was . expressed concerning the work of the executive of the Horticultural Society, under whose auspices the show was held.

An additional award made, after yesterday’® report in the “Star” appeared, was the pipits .prize in carnations, which went to Mrs Grierson (Te Roti). Mil- W. G. Williams, of Okaiawa, had an interesting exhibit of pot plants and of shrubs' which were much admired.

The ladies’ committee controlling the tea rooms was. as follows: Mesdames Slinger (convenor), Tippett, Archhold, F] intoff and Cowie, with Misses M. Cowie and E. Flintoff. The soft drink and ices were run by Mr Howe-Giles and Mrs L. Franklyn, and the hoop-la by Mr C. Scheuber.

The gladioli that was awarded champion of champions was named “Comrade” and was of a lovely ros© colour with a light coloured centre. The amateur champion spike was “Marmora,” a bloom with a tint of lavender and dull grey and with a reddish centre. These two varieties, said the judges, had been winning at many shows. The sweet peas and carnations made an attractive display, in contrast to the brilliance of the gladioli. A competition for a selection of gladioli bulbs was won by Mrs G. Ooxheacfl and Mrs J. Hadley, who tied and divided the prizes. The bulbs were donated by Mr H. I). Hughes.

In conversation with a “Hawera Star” representative Mr P. Burns, the judge of the amateur classes, stressed the need of a club in this district to further the interests of the growers. He said that valuable information was disseminated from one club to another.

Mr Hughes states that & club' is to be formed and some exhibits have been sent to the Wanganui Show, which takes place to-morrow. This will reciprocate the action of the Wanganui Club in liberally supporting Normanby. i
