“MAN WANTED.”

FASHION SHOW AT OPERA HOUSE

Miss Kay Francis, acclaimed as Hollywood’s best dressed woman, displays a* wardrobe from boudoir and beach pyjama to smart evening gowns in “Man Wanted,” whifeli had its first screening at the Opera House in Hawera last evening, in conjunction with a parade of new season’s goods by McGruer Bone and Company, Ltd. Special attention was given by the istag(ci manager to fujt'njislungs and lighting effects and at the conclusion of the performance the mannequins were applauded by the large audience. The story in “Man Wanted’’ concerns Tom Sheridan and Andy Doyle who have just graduated from Harvard University and haye- obtained situations in a sporting goods store. Sheridan receives notice to report with .some exercising machines to the office of Mrs. Lois Ames, publisher of the “400 Magazine,” and is disgruntled at the prospect of waiting on an old woman when he has an engagement with Ruth Holman,, to whom lie is engaged. Instead of being plain and old fashioned, Mrs. Ames is an exceedingly attractive and modern young person. After a sudden burst of temper on the part of. her secretary, Sheridan is offered the position with other prospects and lie accepts. Mrs. Ames drives him home and then goes to her apartment, where she. finds a' party in progress and her husband paying a good deal of attention to one of the guests. This fails to nettle her as much as it might have done because of her thoughts towards Sheri - dan. There follow evenings of hard work at the office of the magazine and Sheridan’s solicitude' for his_ employer tends towards increased friendliness. Sheridan is invited to Bar Harbour to help finish some special work and their close association brings to Sheridan a realisation of his affection. He returns to New York, howtefvelr, determined to' 'be faithful to Miss Holman. He resigns his position but offers to work a last evening to help Mrs. Ames with certain work. Miss Holman, with whom lief has broken an engagement to work at theoffice, pays an unexpected call and makes a scene. She flounces out at last after returning her ring to Sheridan. This scene proves an opportunity for Mrs. Ames to tell Sheridan that her husband is on his way to Paris with his latest light o’ love to get a divorce. . . There aro many beautiful interior and exterior settings, including a polo] games in which several cliukkas are, witnessed. Racing in Australia, news of the day. a visit to Oberammergau, where the Passion Play is produced, and an intriguing detective story are among the supports.

“SALLY IN OUR ALLEY.”

“Sally in Our Alley” will open a season of four nights and four matinees, commencing at the Opera, House to-morrow. Gracie .Fields is without question one of the most captivating personalities on the _ audible screen. Her completely winning performance in “Sally in Our Alley” makes it easy to understand why she is the idol of the English vaudeville .stage, commanding a salary of £6OO a week. "She plays with exceptional talent the part of Sally Winch, whose ready-made philosophy of life is. as Laughable as it is practical. Besides “Sally,” slie sings “Fall In and Follow the Band” and “Fred* Fanackapan,” a. rollicking Lancashire ballad. A new print of the film will be used for the first time at Hawera. GRAND THEATRE

“SOCIETY GIRL.”

“Society Girl,” a Fox picture with punches and plenty of romance, featuring James Dunn and Peggy Shannon and Spencer Tracv. will be the attraction at the Grand Theatre tomorrow night only. Revolving about the tangled hearts of. a boy of the masses and a- girl of the classes, the highly diverting plot weaves through an amazing series of drainatic conflicts. “Society Girl” is based on the play by John Larkin, junr., with continuity and dialogue by Elmer Harris. Walter Byron, Bert Hanlon, Marjorie Gateson, Euil'a Guy Todd and others are in the supporting cast. Episode No. 2 of “Danger Island” will also he shown.

Owing to the Grand Theatre being sublet on Monday, “Society Girl” will be presented for one night only.
