OPUNAKE RACING CLUB MEETING ON MARCH 17.. ARRANGEMENTS TO CONTINUE Following a review of its finances and prospects the Gpunnke Racing Club committee lias decided to continue arrangements for the race meeting on March 17. The committee decided to investigate next season the question of the Wellington Club being granted March 17 as a racing date. The annual meeting pointed out that serious loss of revenue had resulted to the Opunake Club through the diversion of jockeys, owners, trainers and the sporting public. The ’secretary said all clubs had applied for racing dates to the conference last May and it would have been necessary to lodge an objection before these dates were confirmed. The committee considered the request put forward at the annual meeting that on account of the high valuation ol the racecourse property for rating purposes, the Government should be approached with a view to a reduction. The matter will receive the committee's attention when opportunity otters. To go on with at present would probably necessitate a special sitting of an assessment court and would be too costly. Messrs G. Barr Ilrown, FJ. .1. Forsyth, S. J. R.icliards and A. H. Stevenson were reappointed as a cour.se committee. The following officials were appointed : Honorary surgeon. Dr. T. . Watt; handicapper, Mr 11. Chyle; clerk of scales, Mr H. Holmes ; starter, Mr A. Morse; judge Mr C. H. Washer; honorary veterinarian, Air S. R. Fearer; timekeepers, Messrs Bennett and Baker ; clerks of course, Messrs Tito and Masters.
