Air W. I?. Shaw, of Hawera. was admitted to hospital yCo tend ay for medical observation and treatment following a brief illness. For some time past Air. Shaw has acted as ii.net rf.rd instructor to the Hawera Red Cross Society. The death occurred at her home in Leach Street, New Plymouth, vester-« day of Airs Catherine Smith, aged 88. Alts Smith was the widow of Air Charles Smith, who died three and ahalf years ago, and had resided in Taranaki for 52 years. fAlrs Smith was born :ir ‘Grimsby, England. With her husband she arrived at Wellington in 1880 after making the voyage from ‘Great Britain in the sailing ship Western -Monarch. The couple went to Inglewood, where Air Smith worked until he obtained a position on a farm at Otakeho. Air and Mrs Smith next moved to Hawera, where they conducted a , boarding-house for some years. Then they tok a farm at Cardiff, where they remained 10 years before selling out and acquiring a farm at Mimi. Three years later they bought, another farm at Huirangi and on this they lived until retiring to New Plymouth in 191-0. Airs Smith had been an invalid for about live years.
