Mild temperatures, good rainfall where it was needed most, and an absence of strong, diving north-west winds, were the principal features, or the weather in New Zealand during October. A survey of October weather piepared by the Director of Meteorological Services, Dr. E. Kids,on, states that after a succession of dry, cola months, the rain came when the sod was in an ideal condition to receive it As a, result vegetation made phenomenal growth, and stock was in splendid (condition, while there had been a remarkable increase in dau> production. . . , The total rainfall was eonsideraoly above the average in the eastern districts of the South Island, and parts of Canterbury experienced double tne usual fall. There were also excesses over much of the Wellington and Taranakl provinces, but elsewhere, except in isolated places, the falls were, below normal. Temperatures generally were one degree above the average' for October. and in parts of the North island the excess was up, to two degrees. No severe frosts were recorded: Over the greater part of the Dominion . sunshine was below the average. In the North Island sand in Marlborough the denicienoy was small, but parts of Canterbury had low aggregates. Excesses were, recorded m Auckland, New Plymouth and Inveic&rgiil. , r As a whole, the month was free from severe widespread storms. There was a particularly heavy downpour or rain in the Woodville district on the both, and on the same day a tornado between W/arkwortli and Maimrangi Heads unroofed several buildings and uprooted trees.
