Where wages were supplemented by an employer he would be jrequired to carry the liability for that 1 proportion which the contribution bore to the injured man’s total remuneration. The engineer said that the locrd bodies had to insure the men and collect from the farmers concerned. The chairman said that it should be made clear to farmers that where they subsidised ‘relief workers they were liable for the extra days during which relief workers under No. 5, “over the fence” scheme, worked for them. The county paving the insurance had to get a refund from the farmer concerned. STRAY INC STOCK. The question of straying stock was discussed, the chairman remarking that the danger was very great and that if necessary they must employ a ranger specially. Cr Leslie: If a few nrosecuions were made this would help to stop the nuisance. The chairman said the council must ] make a determined effort to keep cattle and horses off the roads. The council must do its duty in the matter. Cr Monrie said the job must he done at once. He urged the appointment of a ranger. It was resolved that a subsidy of £3 3s be paid to the Manaia Public Library, advice having been received that the Manaia Town Board had .paid a similar amount.

The Health Department forwarded a circular in regard to the contributions of local bodies towards the salary of the health inspector, which needed revision. The total estimated cost of the inspector’s services for the group in which Waimate West was situated was £2OO 9s 9d for the half-year, and the council’s share would be £22 10s for that period.—lt was agreed to urge adherence to the previous amount paid (£SO), les.s 10 per cent.
