DISPUTE OVER OVERTIME
WATERSIDERiS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Owing to a dispute over the payment of overtime to waterside workers the steamer Raranga left New Plymouth for Wellington last night with the loading of her cargo uncompleted. It is stated that at 9.50 there remained half an hour’s work to complete the loading of pigs and. cheese. One of the gang of watersiders working the ship’ approached the stevedore and requested payment (at the usual overtime rates) until midnight; if this was not granted the men would leave the ship at 10 o’clock. The stevedore went away to consult the owners,'and when he returned with them the men were walking off the ship. About half an hour’s work, it was said, would have completed the loading. The vessel sailed at 11.30. Fortunately for the producers, it was stated, the freezing works are close to the wharves, and with the manager of the works on the spot the cheese and pigs were returned to the cool stores without suffering deterioration.
