LONDON, Oct. 11. The disastrous effect of the world depression on shipbuildings is strikingly revealed in Lloyd’s returns for the quarter ending September 30. There were 901,067 tons under construction in the world of vhic i 238,433 tons were in the United Kingdom, the lowest recorded, and 662.634 tons abroad, the lowest since 101 - Moreover, the British figure includes 150,000 tons on which work is suspended. half being represented by a giant Cunarder. Another striking feature is that the tonnage of motorships being built abroad is 385.060, and exceeds steam tonnage, which is 277,574, vhercas only 24,984 tons are being built in tlie United Kingdom, compared with 21-,-849 tons in steamsihps.
