KAPONGA

FLOCK HOUSE FUND.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The members of the Hawera. Savage 01 üb' have every reason to congratulate' themselves on the result of then efforts on Thursday evening last when they gave a concert in aid of funds towards the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association’s efforts to send a. Kaponga boy to Flock House. The town hall was packed, and encores were the order of the evening. The programme was well arranged and provided entertainment- of & varied character. The Savage orchestra under Mr' Ollerensliaw opened the proceedings with a selection and from then on the fun was kept moving at a good pace. There were liakas l by . the savage team, songs by Messrs Malone and M. R. Jones, and elocutionary number from Shakespeare by Messrs Morgan and Jones, Maori songs with isteel guitars by M. R. Jones and an amusing “thought read-, ing” burlesque and. finally a sketch entitled “The Lawyer's Office” in which Savage Morgan and his typist (Savage Poison) kept the audience in fits of laughter. A ease which the lawyer investigated and which provoked much mirth was an alleged complaint from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which was taking proceedings against one Robert Law and William O’Neill for distributing the grubs on the Kaponga. bowling green. During the various short intervals amusing stories were related by members of the party. The nett profit for the evening amounted to £l3 15s, which amount' completes the sum required to send the Kaponga boy to Flock House. Towards the close of the evening the local representative, of the R.S.A., Mr. W. G. Oran, thanked Ariki Gibson and the Savages for the splendid entertainment they had given and for their generosity in coming; to Kaponga at their own expense. He also thanked the public for the unstinted support accorded and made special reference to the free advertising and ! publicity given the concert by the Press. He also thanked Mr. O. Libeau for the use of crockery.

Mr. Oran then called Master Jack McCook, the Flock House nominee, on to the stage where he was introduced to the. President of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr M. R. Jones, who spoke fittingly to Master McCook and wished him every success in his venture.

After the performance, the visitors were entertained at supper and the following ladies’ committee were responsible for the arrangements: Mill's. Tattersall, Law, McCook. Oran, Dawson Bates, Knight, Gibson, Carrington and Taylor. Subsequently an impromptu dance was held, the visitors, joining in and giving another one of the inimitable liakas. The “house” offices were all run by local “diggers” who gave their services gratuitously. .
