FEWER MARRIAGES
NEW ZEALAND’S 1931 FIGURES. RATE LOWEST SINCE WAR. A big decrease in the number of marriages in 1931 is considered by the Government Statistician to reflect in .no Small measure the economic condition of the country. The annual report on the vital statistics of New Zealand for 1931 describes the decrease of 1258 as compared with the previous year, as enormous. The marriage rate of 6.79 a thousand of mean population is stated to be the lowest recorded since the war years. The marriage rate in recent years is a long way below the average rate attained in pre-war years, and the tendency has been for the rate to decline still further.

The June quarter of a three-year period has the largest total of marriages, and is closely followed by December.
