ADDRESS! TO HAWEIR A ASSEMBLY PRESENTATION TO- MINISTER The fortnightly meeting of St. John’s Young People’s Institute was held on Wednesday evening. A very interesting . and instructive programme was enjoyed by the members. Mr Cyril Laurent spoke on the life and general works of the world-famed musical composer “Haydn.” This year marks the bicentenary of tlie musician’s birth. At the end of his lecture Mr Laurent gave several gramophone recordings of Haydn’s works and Miss Ei. Laurent played one of Haydn’s sonatas.
The Rev. R. E. Evans gave a short lecture on the art of public speaking,, pointing out the main parts which must be observed to attain success. Mr Evans pointed out the benefits to be derived through, debating and emphasised that young people could in debate gain experience in public speaking. A presentation from the members of the institute was made to Mr Evans in view of his departure for Auckland. In making the presentation Mrs A. Thomson, vice-president, referred to the active interest which Mr Evans, as patroiii. had taken in the affairs of the institute and she expressed the regret felt at his departure. The programme was interspersed by musical items rendered ib.v Misses A. Glenn and E. Evans, a pianoforte duet and vocal solos by Miss Q. Rowson and Miss E. Laurent.
