A further stage in the policy of British railway- companies in accelerating their services will be attained on September 12, when the winter time-tables will operate. The speed of the Great Western Cheltenham Flyer, already the fastest train in the world, will be raised from 69.18 to 71.3 miles an hour. This is the first time in railway history that a train has been scheduled to run regularly at a -speed of 70 miles an hour or over.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway, which holds two European records tor high speeds over long distances, lias five expresses timed at an average -speed of 60 1 miles an hour or more, including one over 64 miles, for distances over 160 miles. Other lilies’ services will be greatly accelerated.

UNDERGROUND SYSTEM. EXTENSIONS AT LONDON. RUGBY, Aug. 31. Five new stations and four and a half miles of railway track will be added to the equipment of the underground railways within the next three weeks. The total number of stations will then be raised to 130 and the track mileage to 132 miles, including 46 miles of deep-level tubes. Extensions of the line in other directions will be completed later in the year. Of every 496 journeys per head which were made in 1932 by Londoners 226 were made by omnibus, 130 by trams, 78 by underground and 60 by suburban trains and coaches.
