LAKE LEVEL FALLING
RELIEF IN WAIRARAPA. STORM WATERS RECEDING. (By Telegraph—Pr<*s Association.} ' MASTERTON, Sept. I. Reports to-night indicated that the waters of Wairaxapa Lake had dropped from four to six inches to-day, and the settlers are definitely of the opinion; that a considerable improvement can. be looked for to-morrow,' when it is expected a fall of about a foot will occur. Everything indicated that the worst was* over, although it is recognised it is a very big flood. Strenuous efforts were made to-day to save some of the menaced banks, the position being greatly improved when the strong wind dropped, and there was a reasonable chance to save the banks surviving. Nearly all, however, have suffered damage. The Pigeon Bush road is still blocked by lake waters, but it is expected the road will be passable in the morning. A cut was made in the Kahutara River Board’* bank to release flood waters around Kahutara. The slip has been cleared from the railway at Man gain ahoe.
