Airs. W. C. Fyfe, of Waihi Road, Hawera, left to-day on a holiday visit to Wellington. * Mr. and Mrs. J. Lowry, of Napier, accompanied by their three daughters, are visiting Hawera for the school vacation and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Nairn, Milmoe Street. The King has approved the appointment of Sir Hugh Stephenson (Indian Civil Service, retired) as Governor of Burma in succession to Sir Charles Innes, whose term of office expires on December 20, says a British Official Wireless message. Sir Hugh retired in April from the Governorship of Beliar and Orissa.

Mir H. A. Stark, who is visiting Hawera on holiday as the guest of Mr W. iG'. was at one time in practice here as a. public accountant. He left Hawera eleven years ago to join the New York branch of Messrs Brice Waterhouse, an Engiisli firm of chartered accountants represented throughout North and South America. Ati- Stark has 1 been since resident in various .parts of South America and before leaving on an extended holiday was in charge of the Bolivian offices of his firm.

A former well-known football player, Mr. William Thomas Wynvard, aged 49, died at Bevonport, Auckland, on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Wynyard was the second son of Mr. J. G. Wynyard, Devonport, and was a nephew of Col. Wynyard. His grandfather was a captain- in the 58th Regiment. Mr. Wynyard served in the Boer War. He was a member of the New Zealand Rugby League team which toured England in 1907-8. Mr. Wynyard took an active interest in the Devonport Rowing Club, and was one of the founders of the Devonport Orphans’ Club. For 34 years he was connected with the firm of P. Dayman and Co. He is survived by Mrs. Wynyard and a family of two sons and four daughters.
